What is Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?

Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to clothing, gear, or devices worn by workers to minimize exposure to workplace hazards that could cause injuries or illnesses. PPE acts as the last line of defense when engineering and administrative controls are not enough to eliminate risks. From construction job sites to health care settings, PPE provides protection against direct contact with physical, chemical, biological, and electrical hazards.

  • Hand Protection: Vinyl gloves, cut-resistant gloves, and chemical-resistant gloves to protect from direct contact with hazardous materials.
  • Body Protection: Protective clothing, aprons, or full-body suits that prevent skin exposure to chemicals, heat, or sparks.
  • Foot Protection: Steel-toe boots or slip-resistant footwear that prevent physical injuries and enhance stability.

Best Practices for Using PPE

For PPE to be effective, correct use and maintenance are essential. Workers and employers should:

  • Conduct a hazard assessment to determine the right PPE for each task.
  • Ensure PPE is the correct size, fits comfortably, and does not restrict movement.
  • Train employees on the proper use, limitations, and maintenance of PPE.
  • Inspect PPE regularly for wear, damage, or contamination.
  • Practice hand hygiene and other safe work procedures alongside PPE use to maximize protection.

 

PPE should never be the only solution; it should be used in combination with engineering controls (like ventilation systems) and administrative controls (like safe work procedures) to provide comprehensive protection.
